Gifts of Real Estate

A gift of your appreciated real property (such as your home, vacation property, vacant land, farmland, or ranch) can make a great gift to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, or the National Academy of Medicine. All gifts of real estate are subject to prior approval, so please contact the Office of Development if you are considering a gift of real estate.

Here are some of the benefits you may enjoy:

  • Avoid paying capital gains tax.
  • Receive a charitable income tax deduction.
  • Leave a lasting legacy.

How you make a gift of real property

Your real property may be gifted to the Academies by executing or signing a deed transferring ownership through a simultaneous closing. Your gift will generally be based on the property's fair market value, which must be established by a qualified appraisal. Bargain sales made in this manner are also possible. Please contact our office if you are considering a gift of real estate.

Can you make a gift of mortgaged property?

We do not accept gifts of encumbered property; however, you may be able to use it to fund a charitable remainder unitrust. Please contact our office to discuss.
